At Macclesfield FC, Jim Whitley and Robbie Savage have partnered up.

For the next phase of his project at Macclesfield FC, former Manchester United and Wales midfielder Robbie Savage has turned to a former City player and childhood buddy.

At Maccles field FC, a non-league phoenix club established in 2020 after Macclesfield Town was disbanded, Savage presently serves as the director of football. The BBC produced a two-part documentary about the Welshman's engagement with the club and his efforts to move the team up the divisions, which is a testament to how well-known his involvement with the organization is.

Savage has now turned to someone some City supporters may be aware with as Maccles field is now competing in the eighth division of English football, the Northern Premier League West Division.

Jim Whitley, a former City midfielder, was named manager of the Under-18s team by Maccles field on Saturday. His first assignment was to oversee his team's 6-3 victory over Avro.

Whitley was born in Zambia but later moved to Wrexham, Wales, where he made friends with Savage at school. Whitley's younger brother Jeff also played for the Blues. Since then, the two have remained friends, and Savage was the one who inspired Whitley to continue his passion in football.

Savage played on the 1992 FA Youth Cup-winning team that featured David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt, and the Neville twins, while Whitley joined City after graduating from high school. Savage never played for United at the senior level, but he had a successful career playing for teams like Leicester, Birmingham, Blackburn, and Derby.

In the 1997–98 campaign, Whitley made his debut for City and was chosen as the team's Young Player of the Year. He departed City in 2003 after a number of loan stints and went on to play for teams like Sunderland and Cardiff.
