World Cup 2022: Portugal defeats Ghana after Cristiano Ronaldo contentious penalty
After 60 minutes of goalless play, Portugal broke through to defeat Ghana 3-2. However, the Ghanaian coach Otto Addo described the incident-causing play as "a special present from the referee."
Ronaldo won and successfully executed a penalty, but was it necessary? “Why?” Addo enquired. Because of Ronaldo or whatever, you ask? Both the Ghanaian defender Mohammed Salisu and the Portuguese star appeared to make contact with the ball as they both stretched for it.
Addo remarked, "We played the ball. But American referee Ismael Elfath pointed to the penalty area. He didn't get his video helper to step in. The eruption started when Ronaldo converted the penalty kick in the 65th minute to become the first player to score in five World Cups.
It took Andre Ayew eight minutes to tie the score. Two goals in less than three minutes from Joao Felix and Rafael Leao, the two young attackers who will eventually succeed Cristiano Ronaldo, enthralled the pro-Portuguese crowd and appeared to put the game beyond doubt.
However, Ghana struck back once again in the 89th minute. Osman Bukari restored parity by scoring, turned toward the corner flag, and celebrated with Ronaldo's signature "SIIIUUU" chant.
His teammate Antoine Semenyo described Bukari's postgame celebration as "a little bit insane."
However, the remainder of his teammates retrieved the ball and ran back toward the goal. To get a third, they had one minute remaining in the ninety plus nine minutes of stoppage time.
At the conclusion of a crazy half, in one of the final minutes, they came very close to achieving their goal. Inaki Williams crept up behind him unnoticed after an attack had failed and fallen into the clutches of Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa. Costa dropped the ball and extended the play. Williams pounced and temporarily placed Portuguese hearts in mouths.
But just as it mattered most, he stumbled. Portuguese defensemen got up. The favorites managed to hang on for three points.
Afterward, Ronaldo was the main topic of conversation in Portugal because, after a confusing two weeks, he could finally let his game speak for itself. He had been slow and anything but sharp for the majority of his 87 minutes. He was an odd choice for man of the match, though, given the goal.
This made him the FIFA's choice for the news conference following the game. "When questioned about the issue surrounding his explosive interview and subsequent breakup with Manchester United, he responded, "This chapter is over after this week. It's finished."
But the punishment was a topic that came up a lot in Ghanaian conversation. The players were reserved. It's a dubious one, Semenyo declared. But, I'm not sure.
When questioned by a reporter, defender Tariq Lamptey responded, "I think you saw." You may express an opinion.
The coach, Addo, did divulge his. He claimed he requested a "calm and quiet method" to speak with the referee, Elfath. Elfath was reportedly in a meeting and unavailable, according to FIFA authorities, he claimed.
He remarked of the refereeing crew, "I don't know what they are doing, whether they were paying attention. "Whether the VAR was disinterested. It was simply amazing.
Everything was feasible "up until the penalty," he continued. The game then became somewhat erratic.
